Meet Cerro Chame: Playa Caracol’s mountain neighbor

One of the coolest activities you can do from Playa Caracol is a hike up Cerro
Chame, a lush mountain that is visible from the Interamerican Highway that you
also pass through on your way to the Punta Chame beaches.

This mountain has a 560-meter elevation above sea level, and geologically is a
volcanic dome, meaning that it is a type of lava hill that develops over a massive
eruption, such as the one that created the Panamanian isthmus millions of years
ago.

It takes just a few minutes by car from Playa Caracol to get to the hiking trail. It’s
worth noting that Panama is a great place for hiking, either in tropical rainforests,
mountains and other natural sites. Panama is full of hiking sites all over the
country, with various skill levels and lengths.

The overall hike can take up to five hours. The elevation is not that steep, but those
who are not hikers might consider it tiring. Comfortable clothes are recommended,
as well as hats, hiking boots or shoes, lots of water and snacks to stay hydrated
and keep your energy.

When you reach the top you’ll have a spectacular, 360º view of the Pacific Ocean
to the south, and to the north the Sajalices wetlands. Further on you can see the
rest of Panama’s Cordillera Central mountain range, as well as the rest of the
Pacific Coast and the isthmus central provinces.
